Hey guys! It’s been a while since I ventured out of (my beloved) Ann Arbor and reviewed a restaurant in Saline. My most recent was my review of Detroit Dog Co. earlier this year (which reminds me… I need to make another trip there soon! Mmm, hot dogs.)
Well, here is another review from Ann Arbor’s neighboring town of Saline, for Saline Downtown Diner.
I hear SDD cooks up a tasty breakfast menu six days per week, but they also offer homemade BBQ dinners every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening (call ahead to make sure they’re operating if you’re making a special trip!).
After seeing Chow Down Detroit’s RAVE reviews of SDD’s pulled pork, I absolutely had to check ‘em out! I ordered the Pulled Pork Platter which came with two sides and a piece of cornbread.
The rave reviews were much deserved, because SDD’s pulled pork was fantastic! Tender, flavorful, moist, plus a heaping portion! My only critique would be that I prefer more burnt edges in my pulled pork, but all in all, SDD has some very solid house-smoked Kansas City style BBQ.
For my sides, I tried out the Cream 3-Cheese Baked Mac and Cheese (loved it – great flavor, and nice contrast between creamy interior and crisp topping), and the Louisiana Black Beans and Rice (which were just fine but nothing out of this world).
Four BBQ sauces are also available. The Midwest Sweet BBQ Sauce tasted just like Sweet Baby Ray’s (maybe it was?) The other three sauces had a bit more character, and I enjoyed a smattering of all of them on my pulled pork, though the Louisiana Bayou was my favorite.
The huz went for the Rib Combo Platter featuring two BBQ meats – pulled pork and, you guessed it, ribs! He was a big fan. I tried a bite and they were great!
Something about BBQ makes me crave dessert afterward, so we couldn’t resist ordering something sweet to share. We ordered a slice of cheesecake with fudge sauce, which satisfied the sweet tooth. (Next time I’d go for one of their homemade options, as I don’t believe this was homemade.)
All in all, Saline Downtown Diner offers some fantastic homemade BBQ to the Saline community and surrounding areas. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area. The dine-in ambiance leaves a bit to be desired, but carry-out is also available!
That looks so delicious! I know what you mean though, it’s hard to try new places not in Ann Arbor when there are so many options in AA!
